Creativity out of difference - Workshop

Difference is a necessary but not sufficient condition for creativity. Without differences - in worldview, knowledge, life experience, etc. - there would be no potential to create anything new. At the same time, working in highly diverse groups doesn’t guarantee creativity. This is because creative work is based on two inter-related processes: diversifying perspectives and placing them in dialogue with each other. Creativity as a dialogue of perspectives requires us to: a) be sensitive to differences in point of view with others; b) learn to appreciate the value of different points of view; and c) reflexively engage with this difference by creating new perspectives based on it. 

During this workshop a series of practical activities will be used to stimulate each stage of this process by helping participants re-position themselves towards a problem, collaboratively discuss different perspectives and learn from this experience. In the end, practical tools will be offered for how to cultivate those differences that make a 'creative difference' in applied contexts.

Vlad Glaveanu is Associate Professor at Aalborg University, Denmark, Associate Professor II at Bergen University, Norway, and Associate Researcher at the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, and University Paris Descartes, France. He received his PhD from the London School of Economics, UK, and published over 100 articles and book chapters on creativity, imagination, imagination, social change and culture. He recently edited the Palgrave Handbook of Creativity and Culture Research (2016) and co-edited the Oxford Handbook of Imagination and Culture (2017) and the Cambridge Handbook of Creativity across Domains (2017). His other books include: Thinking through creativity and culture (Transaction, 2014), Distributed creativity (Springer, 2014), Rethinking creativity (Routledge, 2015, co-edited) and Creativity: A new vocabulary (Palgrave, 2016, co-edited). He has worked as consultant on topics related to creativity and innovation for different organisations including Climate-KIC and Siemens.
