Julia Bachmann about herself
I am a German student, journalist and photographer who lived in Tromsø for 6 months. Photography was always a passion for me but I am doing it more professional for two years now. My focus was always more on portrait photography and journalistic projects, especially in sports. But in the arctic, I tried to take pictures of these impressive landscapes and capture my feelings about them at the same time as well. For me, the most important aspect about a good photo is that it tells a story.
Julia about her project:
My exhibition “Arctic Dreams” shows some of my favorite pictures I took in my time in the arctic – captured in and around Tromsø, showing landscapes, people, feelings, experiences.
Experiencing polar day and polar night and phenomena like northern lights is unique. Life up here is different and I am grateful that I had this opportunity to get to know more aspects of life and to see the world from another perspective. The world around me – that is my biggest inspiration.
And it is beautiful, especially here in the Arctic. The colors are more intense, the landscape unique, and if you expect a colorless winter landscape, you've done your math without the pastel skies or deep blue mornings of the polar night or the bright northern lights in so many different colors.
I'm also inspired by the people around me, locals and internationals, with many different views and opinions. My exhibition has its focus on life and people here in Tromsø. It is about dreams and about facing the darkness of the polar night, it is about different perspectives, shared experiences, opportunities. It's about how unique the Arctic is and about the fact that the Arctic is more than a cold, dark place with few people – from a photographic, international approach.
